The Market
Despite the difficulties experienced by the global financial markets in 2008, the aerospace industry has remained strong and resilient. The Aerospace Industries Association 2009 Year end Review estimates 2009 aerospace sales to reach $214.1 bn, representing growth of more than 4% on 2008 sales. The civil aerospace sector, military aircraft and missile sales were all expected to register growth, of 2.4%, 8% and 11% respectively. Business jet sales have suffered, however business aviation was expected to strengthen through 2010 as the global economy recovers. The continuing strength of the aerospace industry is also reflected in the UK, with moderate sales revenue growth of just under 1% to a value of £20.6 bn. UK sales are more or less evenly split between civil and military markets, at 50.4% and 49.6% respectively. With the UK sterling currency continuing to be relatively weak, exports from the UK saw growth of 8.1% in civil aerospace and 21.4% in defence markets.
The long term outlook for the aerospace industry remains positive, with predictions of aircraft sales of $2,600 bn up to 2026.
