The Market
During 2009 the USA recorded increased military aircraft and missile sales to $61.7 bn and $14.8 bn respectively. UK defence aerospace sales in 2008 were £10.3 bn, representing an annual increase of 3.1%. UK defence aerospace exports grew by 21.4% over the same period. Competition remains strong in all sectors, with manufacturers across the globe providing options for fighters and transport aircraft, rotary wing and unmanned aircraft systems. The latter type should see continued increase in demand, with the US military requirement being forecast to double between 2010 and 2015. In the current economic climate, defence spending has to compete against other demands on government funding, as illustrated by the UK’s recent Strategic Defence and Security Review. Regardless of the other calls on public spending, there will always be a demand for defence equipment and services, with a requirement for efficient competition and effective developments in military aviation.
