This year marks the 40th display season for the RAF's premier aerobatic display team – the Red Arrows. This official souvenir 100-page magazine pays tribute to the RAF's best and details their history, lists all the team members for the past 40 years, examines the display in detail, looks at the special requirements of the syncro pair and looks behind the scenes at the team's support elements. It also features in depth analysis of the two aircraft types that the team has used, the Folland Gnat and the BAE Systems Hawk, both used as advanced trainers by the RAF. The history of RAF display team flying is recounted and pages are also devoted to the many other official military display teams from around the world, including the Thunderbirds, Frecce Tricolori, Patrouille de France and the Blue Angels.
The Red Arrows performed their first display 40 years ago, at the time flying the diminutive Folland Gnat. In 1980 they converted to their current mount - the BAE Systems Hawk and have enjoyed great success with this leading advanced trainer. By the end of the 2003 season the Reds had flown 3747 displays in 52 countries and entertained millions of spectators. They are still the definitive aerobatic display team, recognised everywhere they go by their bright red aircraft and bright red flying suits. Today their popularity is as strong as ever both with young and old audiences alike and it is likely to remain so for many years to come.
