Assistant / Deputy Editor


£22-28,000 DOE

An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant/Deputy Editor to join our team on Modern Railways. You will be responsible for supporting the Editor in creating market-leading content, for platforms including magazine(s), websites and social media channels that closely reflect the needs of our audience in order to develop and grown sales, reach and engagement.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Produce features, news articles etc as required for production of the magazine on a month-by-month basis
  • Sub-editing of features and contributed content for the magazine, including selection of appropriate images
  • Proof reading of magazine content to maintain high editorial standards
  • Help maintain, control and monitor copy flow and design flow to ensure editorial deadlines are met, in conjunction with the editor
  • With support from the Editor, provide the main editorial input to Modern Railways Insight, the online directory, including regular uploading of news stories and content from the magazine, update company and rolling stock database details
  • To support the magazine’s varied programme of events, including Fourth Friday Club and Modern Railways RVE. This includes assisting with promotion, both online and within the magazine, writing post-event content and helping ensure smooth running of events on the day
  • Liaise with advertising and marketing teams, including identification and provision of potential commercial leads to advertising team, in relation to both the magazine and its associated events
  • Provide input to content on Modern Railways website and social media, including production of weekly (where possible) e-newsletter
  • Plan and instigate, subject to line manager approval, information gathering trips, both in the UK and abroad, taking into account the requirements and opportunities for the wider Key Publishing portfolio
  • Keep up to date with developments in the core sector, especially news and trends
  • Attendance and active participation at relevant shows and exhibitions

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

  • Published material and/or ‘Personal’ publishing (through social media or other established channels)
  • Strong exposure to the rail industry, with a basic understanding of operations, finance and policy
  • Good working knowledge of word processing, email and internet
  • Excellent knowledge and use of written English and grammar
  • Awareness of reader sensibilities (and client sensibilities) and of accepted good taste
  • Excellent knowledge of the core subject matter and maintenance of that knowledge
  • Ability to prioritise workload and to manage a range of tasks
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
