Editor – Britain at War

Salary

The Editor is responsible for overseeing content creation in the military history area, alongside a specific focus on Britain At War (a monthly magazine) and associated brands (such as Keymilitary.com). You will be responsible for producing products and content for them in print and on other platforms and for it to be on-schedule and within budget and provide a good basis for advertising and other revenue-generating metrics. You will generate an appropriate amount of content that will likely be augmented by material from a wide range of subject-matter-expert contributors.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee the costing and payment of contributors and arrange for safe return of material upon production/rejection
  • Improve the quality and range of contributor material
  • Maintain/oversee relevant budgets
  • Plan/maintain/control/monitor content creation to ensure despatch on designated deadlines to distinct platforms
  • Assess manuscripts/other contributions and ascertain their suitability or need for further research/photography/other images for use
  • Proactively support and attend shows, events and other related activities as appropriate to the development of the brand
  • Keep up to date with developments in the subject sector, especially news and trends
  • Plan/maintain/control/monitor content creation across the team to ensure maximum efficiency of output against defined objectives, maximising all differentiation to make each brand distinct in its market
  • Management, training and development of any team member

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Good or exceptional subject knowledge, based on observation or participation
  • Experience of managing and leading a team
  • Good working knowledge of publishing systems; e.g. InDesign, WordPress etc.
  • Strong writing and editing expertise
  • Good knowledge of publishing and the law, especially relating to libel; ascertaining copyright and breaching thereof
  • Strong understanding of magazine production process (strong copy-editing ability)
  • Print craft skills – front covers and magazine interiors
  • Digital skills and social media
  • Ability to prioritise workload and to manage a range of tasks
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
